Intro:remix compo

Explanation

A competition where the goal is to 'remix' an existing intro. Remix in this context means messing/changing/fucking up the source code (and datafiles) of the intro to give it a new look, touch and sound.
Update: updated some text on the page and the code in the sdl+sdl_sound version a bit. Apparently if your sdl_sound is linked with mikmod (and not with modplug as it SHOULD imo) sdl_sound will crash the intro due to the module for some reason (seems to work with other .xms).

Details

Aka random info.

Programming language(s)?

C and/or C++ only.

Where goes the line between a remix and a totally different/new intro?

Very hard to say, ultimately the voters (you) will decide.. The result must be atleast a little like the original and have some things in common with it..not all new code that is.

Are things it should have in common with the original rated programming-wise or appearance-wise?

Both I guess, but mostly appearance.

Jury or votes?

Votes.

What intro to use?

I've looked around a little and Nean der taler by bypass seems good. (No license hassle, there is a linux and mac port etc) So this is what we will use.
Get it here: linux(GLUT+MikMod), linux(SDL+MikMod), linux(SDL+SDL_sound), osx, win32.

That linux version needs so many extra libs?!

There is one using GLUT and another SDL for windowing, choose whichever suits you. There is also the choice between SDL_sound and Mikmod for sound playback.

Max size of remix?

I've decided to reduce the limitations as much as possible to allow more creative freedom. The size of the remix must however not exceed 5Mb when packed in a popular format (i.e .zip, tar.gz, bz2, rar).

What about the sound?

The music must be derived from the original module in one way or another. Specify how in a readme or something.

The font/2d graphics?

Replace, mess with, delete, keep..do whatever you wish.

Requirements

The remix must be submitted with full source code (and datafiles) and compile with gcc atleast. It would be nice if the remix demands similar hardware requirements as well, but this is absolutely not a rule. Put shaders in there if you really want to.

Other

If you have the ability please test your remix on several platforms and systems. Also include a windows binary if you can. And of course try to stick to standard c/c++. Good luck and have fun.

When

Probably early 2005. I hope.
